Trekking in Ladakh

Ladakh is known for some of the most challenging treks in India. It is located in the northernmost state of Jammu and Kashmir, at an altitude ranging from 2,750 meters to 25,170 meters. Ladakh is also known by the name of cold desert of India and 'Little Tibet' because of similar landscapes of Ladakh and Tibet. It is inhabited by Buddhist population and is a land of many colourful monasteries.
The land of Ladakh is a paradise for trekking enthusiasts and attracts trekkers from far away places. Trekking in Ladakh includes crossing some of the highest mountain passes in the world, which create more thrill in exploring this Himalayan mountain destination. Ladakh can be divided into three main regions i.e. Kargil Region, Indus Valley and Zanskar Region, for the purpose of trekking.
Temperature in Ladakh region may be quite warm during day time but it gets chilly in the evenings, even during summer season. Most of the areas of Ladakh region are dry. Airport in Ladakh region is located in Leh, which is connected by regular flights from Delhi, Chandigarh and Srinagar. Jammu Tawi (680 km) is the nearest railway Station and is connected by trains from major cities of India. Ladakh can be reached by road from Jammu via Srinagar or from Chandigarh via Manali (473 km).
Major Trekking Routes of Ladakh
Kargil Region
One of the major destinations of trekking in Ladakh, Kargil town is situated at an altitude of 2,704 meters on Srinagar - Leh highway. Kargil is the main base for trekking to Zanskar Valley and some other Himalayan regions. A large number of Willow and Poplar trees along with Apple, Apricot and Mullberry orchards add beauty to the entire Kargil region. Trekking in Kargil region provides an opportunity to visit some of the famous hills like Tololing, Tiger Hill and Mushkoh Valley.
Ladakh-Zanskar Trekking
Zanskar is one of the challenging routes of trekking in Ladakh. The trek starts from Darcha and passes from Shingo La, which is located at a height of 5,100 meters, finally ending in the starkly magnificent Zanskar region. On the trekking route, one can have a view of some of the beautiful Buddhist monasteries of India, namely Lamayuru, Phuktal and Lingshet.
Indus Valley Trek
Indus Valley lies at an altitude of 3,500 meters between Ladakh towards North and Zanskar towards its South. This trek in Ladakh provides glimpses of the rich ancient historical sites. The famous snow fed Indus river flows through the region on which its name has been christened. During the trail one has to cross numerous villages, where age old Tibetan and Buddhist traditions and customs are still alive.
Tso Moriri Lake Trekking
The area where Tso Moriri lake is located, at an altitude of 4,500 meters, is accessible for few of the months in a year during summers. This trek gives you a chance of spotting the famous animal of the region, Yak. Passing from the rugged terrains of Himalayan region, the trekking expedition reaches the beautiful Tso Moriri Lake surrounded by a variety of Himalayan birds and mountains as high as 6,000 meters above sea level, which are covered with snow for most of the year.
